Ban bonfires in urban areas

We the undersigned petition the council to To make a local bye-law that states that it is an offence to light a bonfire in urban areas and smoke control zones and make it punishable with a fine. This would also need an out of hours teams of PCSOs to take evidence and enforce. The use of BBQs would not be included unless it becomes a nuisance.

Residents should have a basic human right to be able to enjoy their gardens, open their windows and breathe clean, unpolluted air.

There is no justification for burning garden waste given that

Individuals with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma), fetuses, infants, young children, and the elderly will be even more vulnerable to the health effects of smoke exposure.

The smoke released by any type of fire is a mixture of particles and chemicals produced by the incomplete burning of carbon-containing materials. All smoke contains carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and particulate matter (PM or soot). Smoke can contain many different chemicals, including aldehydes, acid gases, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), benzene, toluene, styrene, metals and dioxins.
